Don’t rip up our rail

Our communities in the Northern Rivers deserve fast, reliable and frequent public transport services that get us where we need to go, when we need to get there. But the Nationals, in lockstep with the Labor party, have this week rammed a Bill through NSW Parliament’s lower house that will see the Casino to Murwillumbah rail line ripped up.

We know that what the community wants is a world class rail service running alongside a vibrant eco-friendly rail trail — we can, and should, have both.

Dear Labor & Coalition MPs,

Our communities here in the Northern Rivers deserve fast, reliable and frequent public transport services that get us where we need to go, when we need to get there. But this week your parties came together to vote for a Bill that would see the Casino to Murwillumbah rail line ripped up.

We know that what the community wants is a world class rail service running alongside a vibrant eco-friendly rail trail — we can, and should, have both.

That’s why I’m asking that you support The Greens calls for;

- An inquiry into the Transport Administration Amendment (Closures of Railway Lines in Northern Rivers) Bill 2020 so the community can have our say on the long-term future of public transport in the region.
- Amendments to be passed that would ensure the rail line is kept in public hands.
- Amendments to be passed that would protect the rail corridor for the return of passenger rail services in the future and ensure that any rail trail would be constructed alongside the tracks instead of on top of them.
